06-19-2012, SWAT Commends Daytona International Speedway for Making Grandstands Smoke-free

Teens from across Northeast Florida came together today to recognize Daytona International Speedway for its bold move to make the speedway’s grandstands smoke-free. The teens from 21 surrounding counties are part of Students Working against Tobacco (SWAT). They also challenged other sporting and entertainment venues in the state to follow the example set by the speedway and protect more Floridians and visitors from secondhand smoke.

Teens from 22 counties in North and Central Florida will gather in Daytona to recognize Florida’s prestigious and historic sporting venue for its bold move to go smoke-free in its grandstand seats. The teens are part of Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) and will also challenge other sporting venues in the state to follow the example set by DIS and protect more Floridians and visitors. The youth will be joined by NASCAR driver, Jeffrey Earnhardt, who is supporting Tobacco Free Florida’s campaign in Florida this year.

Apart from sunshine and warm ocean waters, Florida’s sandy beaches and surrounding coastal environment have one thing in common: Cigarette litter. In time for World Oceans Day, June 8, the Florida Department of Health and Tobacco Free Florida want to educate Floridians about the impact that cigarette litter has on one of the state’s greatest natural attractions.

Manatee County youth won the grand prize in a national video contest about the dangers of tobacco. The nationwide contest, which was sponsored by U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin’s Office, asked youth and young adults to produce original videos based on the theme, “Tobacco – I’m Not Buying It.”

Five students from the University of Florida’s undergraduate nursing program won the grand prize in a national video contest about the dangers of tobacco. The contest, which was sponsored by U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin’s Office, asked teens and young adults nationwide to produce original videos based on the theme, “Tobacco – I’m Not Buying It.”

May 31 marks the 25th annual World No Tobacco Day (WNTD), an international day of action in response to the global destruction caused by tobacco use. Across the state, the Florida Department of Health’s Tobacco Free Florida campaign, youth and adults are recognizing the important observance with events and community education related to the 2012 WNTD theme, Tobacco Industry Interference.
